Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s home ‘now like a fortress’

"Privacy's the key factor," claim royal expert

| Updated:

The family home of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex has been likened to a “fortress” following a claim that privacy is a leading concern for the couple.

Meghan and Markle and Prince Harry came under fire earlier in the summer after it was revealed £2.4 million of public money had been spent on renovating Frogmore Cottage in Windsor.

Thought to have been among the updated fixtures and fittings is a designer kitchen and a copper bath worth up to £5000.

The couple also faced a backlash for keeping baby Archie’s christening a media-free, private affair.

This morning, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s son, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor was christened in the Private Chapel at Windsor Castle at an intimate service officiated by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are so happy to share the joy of this day with members of the public who have been incredibly supportive since the birth of their son. They thank you for your kindness in welcoming their first born and celebrating this special moment. Their Royal Highnesses feel fortunate to have enjoyed this day with family and the godparents of Archie. Their son, Archie, was baptised wearing the handmade replica of the royal christening gown which has been worn by royal infants for the last 11 years. The original Royal Christening Robe, made of fine Honiton lace lined with white satin, was commissioned by Queen Victoria in 1841 and first worn by her eldest daughter. It was subsequently worn for generations of Royal christenings, including The Queen, her children and her grandchildren until 2004, when The Queen commissioned this handmade replica, in order for the fragile historic outfit to be preserved, and for the tradition to continue. The decision to keep the identities of Archie’s godparents under wraps also sparked criticism within royal circles, according to reports.

Royal biographer Katie Nicholl explained during a TV appearance that secluded living was a “key factor” for Harry and Meghan.

She told ITV host Christine Lampard: “We know that they’re living this wonderful tucked-away life at Frogmore Cottage which is pretty much, from what I hear, a fortress.

The author also claimed the family will soon spend time with the Queen and Prince Philip at Balmoral in Scotland.

She said: “The Sussexes are due to be going for the very first time and, of course, taking little Archie for his first family summer holiday.”

Adding that Meghan will be in Scotland as she turns 38, the royal expert also speculated about how her birthday will be celebrated.

Ms Nicholl continued: “Meghan will be celebrating her 38th birthday early in August on the fourth.

“It’s a nice place to do it – so probably a birthday tea there.”
