Prince Harry and Meghan Markle announce details about their wedding cake

It's a break from tradition!

| Updated:

Prince Harry and his fiancée Meghan Markle have ditched tradition when it comes to their wedding cake.

Rather than opting for a traditional fruit cake like other royal couples, they have enlisted the services of a London-based bakery to create a lemon elderflower cake “incorporating the bright flavours of spring”.

Sounds delicious!

Kensington Palace confirmed Harry, 33, and Meghan, 36, have hired pastry chef Claire Ptak, owner of Violet Cakes in East London, to whip up their wedding cake.

“Prince Harry and Ms. Markle have asked Claire to create a lemon elderflower cake that will incorporate the bright flavours of spring.

“It will be covered with buttercream and decorated with fresh flowers,” confirmed a spokesperson.

“Claire Ptak, who was raised in California, focuses on using seasonal and organic ingredients in her cakes.”

The spokesperson added: “Prince Harry and Ms. Markle are looking forward to sharing the cake with guests at their wedding at Windsor Castle on May 19th.”

There’s actually a connection between Meghan and Claire: the future royal once interviewed Claire for her now-defunct lifestyle website, The Tig!

Meghan closed the blog last year, after striking up her relationship with Harry.

In a statement, Claire said: “I can’t tell you how delighted I am to be chosen to make Prince Harry and Ms Markle’s wedding cake. Knowing that they really share the same values as I do about food provenance, sustainability, seasonality and most importantly flavour, makes this the most exciting event to be a part of.”

Claire added on Instagram: “Kinda excited to announce this one!! Violet has been chosen to make the wedding cake for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

“They both share so many of the same values regarding food provenance, sustainability, seasonality and of course, flavour!”

Royal couples traditionally choose fruit for their wedding cake, so this is certainly a break in tradition.

Prince William and Kate Middleton served a multi-tiered fruit cake decorated by sugar flowers, created by Fiona Cairns, at their 2011 wedding.

They did, however, have a second cake as well, a chocolate one requested by sweet-loving William!

Harry and Meghan will marry on Saturday, May 19 at St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle.

The couple, who announced their engagement in November, will be married by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby.

They’ve invited around 1,000 members of the public to share their day, giving them access to the grounds of Windsor Castle. There will also be a 1pm carriage ride through Windsor.

Following the vows, there will be a reception at Windsor Castle, followed by a private reception for close friends and family, thrown by Prince Charles.
