Corrie viewers were left stunned when show favourite Sally Metcalfe was attacked by her prison cellmate.
The character, played by 55-year-old Sally Dynevor, has been having a hard time behind bars and last night’s episode saw her set upon by hard-faced inmate Marcia.
Fans winced as Marcia held Sally up to a bunk and her screams and cries could be heard as the camera panned away.
Viewers soon voiced their upset and the hashtag #FreeSally began circulating on Twitter.
One viewer tweeted: “Oh no poor Sally this is so unfair #Corrie.”
Another added: “That sounded dreadful Poor Sally #Corrie.”
A third commented: “Sally is breaking my heart #Corrie #FreeSally.”
Others complained that the scene was too brutal for that time of the evening.
“@itvcorrie that Sally scene shouldn’t of been shown this early #Corrie,” wrote one viewer.

Marcia accused Sally, who has been wrongly imprisoned for fraud, of grassing her up for having drugs in their cell.
She had previously threatened to tell the prison guards earlier in the episode, but never did.
In the second episode of last night’s double bill, Sally appeared on screen with some nasty looking cuts and bruises to her face.

Prison guards assured Sally she was safe because Marcia had been put in isolation. However, it looked like her troubles weren’t over as Marcia’s sidekicks gave her knowing looks.
A tearful Sally later told her family on the phone: “You’ve got to get me out of here. I’m so scared.”
