Coronation Street actress Elle Mulvaney has opened up about her character Amy Barlow’s teenage pregnancy storyline.
Last night 14-year-old Amy dropped the bombshell on her family that she was pregnant.
Elle, who has played Amy since 2010, gave a rare interview to TV Times magazine where she discussed the responsibility she feels about doing the plot right.
She said: “I was mostly excited, but it is a bit scary. Teenage pregnancy isn’t uncommon, so I knew there was a responsibility to do it justice.
“At the same time, I’ve taken it as a good opportunity to show what I’m capable of as an actress.
“It’s great to have a bit of recognition, and to know that people believe in me.”
Confessing her struggles playing out the storyline, Elle added: “There was a scene where Amy’s having a conversation with Steve and Tracy in the living room, and I had to go into the bathroom and cry.
“It’s hard to change emotions so quickly. I wanted it to be realistic, but it’s not always about sobbing.
“Sometimes it’s more stress crying, I had to find that between point.”
Last night also saw the reactions of Amy’s family members. While grandmother Liz and mum Tracy remained calm, her dad Steve went flying off the handle and accused Dev’s son Aadi of being the father.
While Aadi admitted to knowing Amy was pregnant, he denied being the father.

In Wednesday’s episode Tracy and Steve will accuse Amy’s cousin Simon of being the father.
It has been speculated that the father of the baby is gang leader Tyler Jefferies.

Tyler has been terrorising the Barlow family ever since Simon gave him up to the police after he was forced to raid the cafe and Daniel Osbourne’s flat.
He exacted his revenge with a terrifying campaign of intimidation which also saw Peter shot in the belly with a paintball gun (although it wasn’t clear the firearm was a dud at the time) and even poisoned Ken Barlow’s pooch Eccles.
