Coronation Street’s Lewis Archer killed off in New Year special

Audrey was devastated to find him

Coronation Street fans’ hearts broke for Audrey last night, as lover Lewis Archer left her.

Daughter Gail had been warning her that the conman was about to rip her off yet again, after catching him at a hotel with a mystery woman.

The salon owner decided to believe the lovable cad’s protests that he would never do that to her.

But we watched as Audrey sat alone at dinner at the Bistro waiting for him to arrive, while Lewis packed a case at home and grabbed his passport.

When Lewis failed to show, Audrey headed home… but what followed was unexpected for us all. She found Lewis slumped on the bedroom floor, dead.

Some 20 years to the day that she lost her beloved Alfie!

Earlier in the episode Leiws had complained of stress and shoulder pain, which he blamed on Gail being constantly on his case.

But it seems Gail was wide of the mark… in Lewis’s hand was an engagement ring.

Apparently he was set to propose to Audrey and whisk her away on holiday!

Gail tried to comfort her mum, but Audrey told her to leave, warning she didn’t want to see her for a while.

Viewers were equally stunned by the sudden death…

Lewis, played by Nigel Havers, first appeared in Coronation Street in 2009, first breaking Audrey’s heart after stealing from Barlow’s Bookies and doing a runner.

He returned in 2012, telling Audrey he was a man reformed and they got back together, only to split again before he began an affair with Gail, to dupe her out of a stash of money.

He fled the country again, only to return last year, claiming he really was a changed man this time.
