Corrie fans call out perceived ‘plothole’ in Amy Barlow secret abortion story

The young teenager made a big decision all alone

Coronation Street’s Amy Barlow was left sobbing alone last night, after secretly aborting her unborn baby.

Many viewers at home also found themselves in tears, watching the sad scenes involving the teenage daughter of Tracy Barlow and Steve McDonald.

But others were upset and angry by what they believed to be a huge plothole in the story.

On Wednesday night (20 February), 14-year-old Amy underwent an abortion without the knowledge of her parents – or their consent.

And fans were stunned that the schoolgirl could have had the procedure without her parents’ approval.

Although new friend Bethany Platt suggested that Amy talk to her family first, the child went ahead with the procedure anyway.

When she returned home, Amy didn’t tell her parents she’d had the termination, leaving them to believe she was still pregnant with Tyler’s baby.

But fans questions how the minor could have been offered the operation without Tracy and Steve knowing.

One tweeted: “Surely they wouldn’t do the abortion on Amy at her age without her parents being there…”

Another said: “Amy age 14 wouldn’t be allowed to go ahead with the abortion without her parents consent or am I wrong?”

While another commented: “#Corrie this storyline about Amy’s abortion is not right. In the UK you need parental consent if under age where in law the parent has full responsibility for a child up to the age of 18?”

“This doesn’t make sense,” said another. “Amy was told she couldn’t have an abortion without a parent? #corrie.”

One viewer even pointed out the irony of Bethany helping Amy through her abortion, even though she “is the product of a teen pregnancy” herself.

In fact, the British Pregnancy Advisory Service state that girls under the age of 16 CAN have an abortion without the consent of their parents.

Doctors are said to advise the girls to speak to their parents, but they will not force young people to confide in their carers or guardians.

Fans were in bits over the scenes, as Steve painted the baby’s nursery at exactly the same time as Amy was having the abortion.

And expect plenty more tears when expectant grandparents Steve and Tracy are told the truth about their daughter’s pregnancy.
