Corrie fans divided as The Connors take over The Rovers

Are you happy with the new owners?

| Updated:

Johnny and Jenny Connor have become the new landlords of Coronation Street’s famous boozer The Rovers Return.

And it’s news that has divided loyal Corrie fans.

The pub is one of the most important, if not THE most important, buildings in Weatherfield – where births, deaths and marriages are announced, residents fall in love, or out of love, or tuck into one of Betty’s famous hotpots.

And ITV viewers are understandably very territorial about the place.

It was touch and go who would win the battle to become the owners, with Johnny initially offering Peter Barlow a low offer – which he refused.

But, desperate for a sale, Toyah went behind her estranged husband’s back to accept the offer – giving the Connors a new focus after losing out on the fight for Underworld.

The duo now join a long-line of legendary previous owners, including Bet Lynch, the Duckworths, Fred Elliott and Steve McDonald, along with Liz at various times since the pub first opened.

Johnny told his wife: “It’s gonna take us a bit of time to get our heads around running this place.”

Worried about his wife working with his lover Liz, Johnny later warned Liz she should give her notice in.

But she was having NONE of it. After all, she’s part of the furniture in the famous pub!

Will she work peacefully side by side with the Connors, though?

Some fans were thrilled that the Connor’s had taken over, with one saying: “Can’t wait for Johnny and Jenny to run the Rovers. Great move @itvcorrie Jenny will be an amazing Landlady and Johnny is simply fab whatever he does  Great new era. Hopefully it’ll be long term. Johnny and Jenny – The Golden Couple.”

However, others complained that the Connors are “taking over the Street”.

One lamented: “SO johnny and jenny now own the rovers, carla is going to be co-owning the factory again and michelle runs the bistro with robert.. imagine thinking the connor’s weren’t taking over the whole street then.”

While another blasted: “Yeah Johnny ‘Rotten’ Connor’s reward for being a kidnapper, cheater and general all round disgusting pig is to be given even more screentime as the Rovers landlord!”

And there were some other theories suggested by canny fans, that actually sounded like good ideas!

One Johnny-hater said: “I’m kind of hoping Jenny and Liz both ditch Johnny when they remember what a sleaze he is and then they team up, take the pub off him and run the Rovers together!”

Another suggested: “How long before Jenny tries to turn the Rovers into an upmarket wine bar?”

Well it would give Michelle a run for her money!

A mischievous viewer expressed delight at the thought of “Jim coming back and holding up the Rovers at gunpoint”.

Well… he is coming back soon.

We can’t wait to find out what Jim thinks about everything, so we can’t.
