Sinead Tinker put Ken Barlow in an impossible situation next week when she asks him not to tell his son Daniel that she has cervical cancer.
The pregnant machinist has been fearing the worst for weeks after unexplained bleeding during her pregnancy.
And her fears are confirmed when she goes to get the results of her biopsy and is told the lump on her cervix is cancer.
She’s also told that she needs to seriously consider terminating her much-longed for pregnancy so she can begin treatment right away.
But Sinead has absolutely no intention of terminating her pregnancy and breaks down in tears when she gets home.
Ken calls round to the flat and is concerned to see Sinead so distressed and he’s shocked when she reveals her diagnosis to him.
But then she asks him for a huge favour and not to mention anything to Daniel as she doesn’t want him to know.
Ken is puzzled as to why she’d keep something of such enormity to herself and Sinead explains that she doesn’t want to put Daniel in the position where he has to choose between her and the baby.
She tells him that she’s been told to consider terminating the pregnancy.
Sinead knows that however much Daniel loves the baby, he would want her to have the best possible chance of getting better – and Sinead’s already decided that she will do whatever it takes to protect her child.
Will Ken be able to promise he’ll keep the devastating news to himself?
Actress Katie McGlynn has revealed that Sinead will do whatever it takes to keep her baby alive.
She said: “All the way through it she’s constantly thinking about the baby, even though she’s only around three months pregnant when she finds out that she might have cancer she’s still thinking about the baby.
“When they say to her you’ve got a lump, she says ‘is the baby OK?’. She’s got a maternal instinct straight away, she’s not thinking about herself.”
And Sinead is going to keep her cancer worries away from fiancee Daniel Osbourne.
Katie added: “I think it’s because her worst fear is for Daniel to find out.
If she tells anyone there’s a chance that Daniel will find out and because she doesn’t know the full news herself yet she’s just keeping everything to herself because she can’t risk anyone finding out for his sake.
“She knows it’s going to break his heart.”
She has also convinced herself that it is somehow her fault that she could have cancer.
The actress revealed: “Heartbreak over blaming herself for the cancer because she had a termination – definitely.
“She says to the doctor when she finds out that it might be cancer, ‘I’ve had an abortion is that why?’.
“They assure her that it’s not but she still secretly blames herself because she thinks it is.”
