EastEnders has confirmed serial killer priest Lucas Johnson will be returning later this year.
Lucas’s return is set to turn Denise’s world upside down once again.
EastEnders: Who is Lucas Johnson? What did he do?
First appearing in 2008, Lucas was tracked down by his daughter Chelsea. They discovered he’d found Christianity after a troubled past with addiction.
He came across as the picture perfect family man and eventually he and Denise got engaged.
But things soon took a dark turn…
Lucas’ holier-than-thou facade started to slip when he left his ex-wife Trina to die. Denise’s ex-husband Owen also became collateral damage in a memorable episode which ended with Denise and Lucas getting married.
However she had no idea what her new husband was really like.
When Denise found out the truth, Lucas framed his wife for the murders and faked her suicide.
Whilst Albert Square mourned for their friend and neighbour, it was revealed in a huge twist that Denise was alive – Lucas had been holding her hostage in the derelict basement next door.
Eventually the full extent of Lucas’s crimes were revealed and he was arrested.
EastEnders: Lucas Johnson 2016 return
Lucas made another appearance in 2016 when Denise and Patrick paid him a visit in prison. The former priest was adamant he’d absolved his sins. But Denise demanded he never contact her again.
Lucas Johnson return in 2020 – What’s to come?
After four years of relative peace, Lucas is set to return to EastEnders and cause shockwaves amongst Albert Square residents. Has he really seen the error of his ways? Or could he kill again?
What did Don Gilet and Jon Sen say about Lucas’ return?
Speaking about Lucas’s return, actor Don Gilet said: “I am thrilled and honoured to be asked to breathe life once again into such a complex, controversial and divisive character, but most importantly, to have another opportunity to work alongside one of the UK’s finest actors, Diane Parish. I feel blessed.”
Executive producer Jon Sen added: “Bringing back Don to the Square has been on our wish list for some time now as there’s definitely some big unfinished business with Lucas and he certainly hasn’t let Denise go. His reign of terror put him firmly up there with Walford’s biggest villains and I can’t wait for audiences to watch his return unfold.”
EastEnders airs Mondays at 8.05pm, Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7.35pm and Fridays at 8.30pm on BBC One.
