It seems EastEnders wanted to try something new last night and started to use music to heighten the drama of certain scenes.
But fans were divided over the format change – with some saying it was a really nice touch, and others accusing the show of trying to be like Hollyoaks.

When Mick Carter had another panic attack, The XX’s Angels played in the background, as the lights were flashing and Mick passed out, falling off a ladder.
Linda ran in and shouted for someone to call an ambulance, while Stuart followed and calmly talked Mick through the attack, bringing him out the other side.
Later on, when Bailey was up on the roof having received a telescope as a present from her family, a moving song played over the top.
Fans were divided over whether EastEnders should be using music in this way though.
Some said it ruined the otherwise brilliant episode – and that the show was trying to be Hollyoaks.
Another thing to point out from that episode, was the use of music in the background of scenes. Those being when Bailey went to the roof & Mick’s panic attack. I hope this is a one off as I really didn’t feel like it worked and the scenes would have been fine without. #EastEnders

Errrrrrm I’m sorry like but what’s with all the emosh music in #EastEnders???? The xx and now this telescope scene

I’m sorry but I’m really hating the non-diegetic music in #EastEnders. Two times in one episode as well! It’s just not EE. Please don’t try and be Hollyoaks!

@jonarthonsen When #EastEnders breaks from house style it always looks horribly amateur. The incidental music was horribly intrusive tonight, and marred an otherwise fantastic episode

#Eastenders What’s the dilio with the encroaching incidental music, the ghosts/halucinations and other non-social realist production choices of late?

Wasn’t into the music w/Mick’s panic attack. It took away from the event. I actually looked back at my Twitter feed until it was done. However, the music w/Bailey’s scene fit well. #EastEnders

What is the sentimental music all about? I hate it! #EastEnders

Others felt the music was a great fit and said it gave the show a real cinematic feel.
They said it was a “nice change” and they ‘loved’ it.
Felt like I was watching a movie not a tv show tonight and I was crying cos of the music and how proud I am of everyone #Eastenders @bbceastenders pic.twitter.com/sHwNnhIhFd

#EastEnders – nice touch with the music in tonight’s episode. #Heaven17 singing #Temptation while Ben & Halfway bonded drinking in The Queen Vic? A tease maybe of what’s to come? @bbceastenders

I disagree, they really don’t use music in Eastenders, so it’s a nice change every now and then …. especially on good scenes like tonight’s

Mick havin a panic attack with Angels by The XX playing in the background was such a powerful scene, the choice of music & the visual went so well together, anxiety is awful & each panic attack is equally as scary, well done for highlighting it in men@bbceastenders #eastenders

That episode was amazing tonight I loved the music playing over the scenes #Eastenders
