EastEnders return: Stars to kiss through plastic screens to get around social distancing

EastEnders will return to screens next month

EastEnders stars will be using plastic screens to get around social distancing.

The BBC soap resumed filming in June after production stopped in March due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Soaps such as Coronation Street and Emmerdale are adhering to social distancing rules. However it seems BBC has found a way to still film scenes involving kisses safely.

According to The Mirror, BBC drama boss Piers Wenger said productions such as EastEnders are using “ingenious” ways to get around filming restrictions.

These methods include having actors kiss through a sheet of perspex, which will be taken out post-production.

Another thing bosses have admitted to doing is putting cast and crew members in “bubbles”.

When will EastEnders return?

EastEnders will return to screens Monday September 7. Instead of airing its usual 30-minute episodes, instalments are expected to now be 20 minutes long.

But despite episodes being shorter, it sounds like there’s plenty of drama to come.

Last week it was announced that British singer, actress and presenter Mica Paris will be joining the soap as new character Ellie Nixon.

Ellie is a wolf in sheep’s clothing, far more than her warm-hearted facade lets on.

Meanwhile viewers will see a continuation for Sharon and Ian. The best friends have been isolating in The Vic together after Sharon became the new owner.

However it’s not looking good for Ian, who is still hiding the secret about Dennis Rickman Jr’s death.

Lockdown has been difficult for Chantelle, who has been isolating with her abusive husband Gray.

The soap will be exploring the impact of domestic abuse in lockdown.

Meanwhile Ruby and Martin have been growing closer, but she’ll be rocked when money begins to go missing from her bank account.

Ruby takes matters into her own hands but things get awkward when Stacey comes back to Walford after a year away.

EastEnders returns Monday September 7.
