Her family have been so busy looking after their seven children that none of them have realised the turmoil Jean is in.

However that’s all set to change in the coming weeks when Kat Slater discovers what Jean has been hiding.

Kat is busy searching the house for one of baby Cherry’s belongings when she finds a strange letter.

Before she knows it she finds herself overcome with curiosity and reads the letter from the hospital.

As it dawns on her that Jean has been hiding such a serious secret from her family, Kat’s devastated and tries to speak to Jean.

Jean is furious Kat has read her letter and leaves her feeling unsettled when she insists her daughter Stacey isn’t to be told about her health issues.

Last week Jean visited her GP who found a lump that she needed to get checked out.

Jean was devastated to realise she may have cancer but took the decision to hide it from her family, thinking they had too much to deal with already, something that may be a mistake.

EastEnders boss Kate Oates said: “Jean’s diagnosis will impact every aspect of her life, including her family, her friendship groups and her mental health.

“I know an actor of Gillian’s calibre will approach the story with great truth and depth.”

A spokesperson for Macmillan Cancer Support added: “It’s been a privilege to work with EastEnders to ensure the plot and the language used in the scripts are a true reflection of the impact that cancer can have.

“We want all the ‘real-life Jeans’ watching to know that we are here to help.
