But fans of the the soaps were divided over the show’s win with some saying it was well deserved and others suggesting it wasn’t Emmerdale’s year.
Congratulations to everyone @emmerdale winning Best Soap at the TV Choice Awards 2019; cast, crew, basically everyone involved in the making of the show.

But the majority felt Emmerdale’s win was unjustified – especially as EastEnders has been on such good form lately…
The only thing I want for tonight is please that ED doesn’t get the best soap award. They don’t deserve it. #emmerdale

who votes for these awards? #Emmerdale wining that award this year shows what a joke the tv choice awards are.

danny winning best actor when ryan deserved it. emmerdale winning best soap when eastenders deserved it. someone swap the awards pls

I can only guess that Emmerdale’s loyal fan base continued to vote for them (myself included) despite the fact the show isn’t at the top of its game. I hope #Emmerdale bosses don’t take this award to mean everything is great.. because it’s really not! #TVChoiceAwards

No doubt fans of #Emmerdale which I’m one will no doubt be aware they have won the best soap award last night. My question is How did that happen with the improbable storylines of late. I’m pleased they have picked up an award but I’m baffled and I’m a massive massive fan

BBC rivals EastEnders did walk away with something though as they landed a double with Kara-Leah Fernandes being named best newcomer while her cast mate Danny Dyer claimed the best actor trophy.
Addressing the audience during his speech, the Mick Carter star said: “I’m very grateful for my life.
“I’ve made a lot of mistakes, well-documented. I’m a human being made up of many flaws, all glued together with good intentions.”
Meanwhile, Coronation Street star Alison King ensured the Manchester-based soap didn’t go home empty handed as she nabbed the best actress award.
