Katherine Kelly has shut down hopes of a return to Coronation Street for soap favourite Becky McDonald, claiming the character is outdated.
The 38-year-old British Soap Award winner, who trained at RADA, talked down reprising the popular character during a chat on This Morning – and seemed unaware Becky had a recent offscreen role on the ITV soap.
Reflecting on her time away from the cobbles, she told hosts Ruth Langsford and Eamonn Holmes: “It’s been seven years now.”
Katherine continued: “I have been asked [about returning] recently. The thing is I don’t know quite how we would do it.”

Becky moved on from Weatherfield in 2012 to begin a new life in Barbados – and the character has not been written back in to appear in front of cameras despite the deaths of half-sister Kylie Turner and close friend Hayley Cropper.
Indicating her portrayal of the gobby ex of Steve McDonald was a “sign of the times”, crime documentary presenter Katherine added: “She was a first sort of ladette on those kind of shows.
“[Becky] can’t go back like that. Also, because I’m seven years older now.
“It would feel like a caricature and times have moved on since then.”

But the Mr Selfridge actress acknowledged a complete overhaul for the character would leave fans disappointed, too.
“If she went back and she was boring, that’d be a let-down,” admitted Katherine.
This Morning viewers meanwhile seemed more interested in how different Yorkshire-born Katherine’s voice sounds in real life.
Wow Katherine is very posh sounding. Very different to how I remember her on #corrie #ThisMorning
