Gail Platt’s departure on Coronation Street
Earlier this year, it was announced that Helen Worth would be retiring from her role as Coronation Street legend, Gail Platt.
This came as sad news for many who have grown comfortable with Gail on their screens for the last fifty years. With Corrie promising ‘a happy ending’ for Gail, her story on the Street finally comes to an end tonight.
With Gail ready to get wed to Jesse Chadwick, she’s planning to start the next stage of her life in France.
But, she’s unaware of a few things… David’s money theft, Shona’s affair, Jesse’s secrecy. The list goes on.
This Christmas Day, Gail’s going to leave the Street one way or another. But, will she leave with Jesse by her side?
Gail’s given us some iconic moments
It’s no surprise that with the character having lived on the Street for fifty years, Gail’s provided us with some big moments. And, some of these have been so memorable that they’ve become classed as iconic Corrie moments.
Some of these moments have given us a right chuckle (think her long-running feud with Eileen and love for olives.)
And other moments have given us a right cry. Gail’s monologue after Aidan’s suicide with forever stay with us.
And then there’s the huge, edge-of-your-seat stuff that Gail’s also been involved in. The Platts have always found themselves in some sticky situations, with Gail’s choices of husbands not really helping with that. Remember when Richard Hillman tried to drown Gail and her kids? That’s a moment ingrained into the minds of many Corrie fans.
Gail is everything we love about Coronation Street
Gail has been a constant in all of our lives for so long, being at the very centre of the much-loved Platt family as their matriarch.
It’s rare that a character sticks around in a soap for as long as Gail has, proving that she’s done something right.
Helen Worth’s talent has played a huge factor in this. Her ability to play both comedic moments and hard-hitting ones too is something to be applauded.
It’s fair to say that Coronation Street has changed a lot over the years as it adapts to the modern age, but Gail’s presence has always summed up everything we love about the soap. When we think of Corrie, we think of Gail. And we’re having a hard time thinking about Corrie without her in it.
She’ll be missed
After fifty years of entertaining us on the cobbles, it’s completely fair that Helen Worth wants a well-earned rest. But, the fact that we’ll greatly miss Gail just shows how much of an impact she has had on the show.
As Gail prepares to exit the Street for good, we can only hope that she gets her happy ever after.
Coronation Street usually airs on Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 8pm on ITV.
