Viewers were then left heartbroken when Val was killed off on 6 August 2015, in the huge Summer Fate storyline.
The feisty redhead was never going to go quietly… No, her death was as dramatic as her life!
A helicopter crashed into the village and a shard of glass fell on Val, just moments after an emotional reconciliation with her sister Diane.

However, some fans have always hoped that Val might return – after all, she WAS planning to fake her own death in order to escape a prison sentence…
And fans are not alone in hoping she returns one day – actress Charlie wants it, too!
Speaking to HELLO! recently, she revealed she “would love” to return to Emmerdale…
She said: “I kind of thought at the end of Emmerdale that my dance was done, but no, that little bit came back when I was on Emmerdale last Christmas.”
She added: “I thought, ‘You know what? I like this’. If you pitch the story, I would be there in a shot.”
Since her death, Val had made several appearances as a ghost.
Firstly to Eric convincing him she was really dead, and then on a videotape describing her final wishes.
More recently, she appeared as a ghost again in Robert Sugden’s special Christmas Day episode in 2017.
Charlie’s former co-star Matthew Wolfenden – aka on-screen stepson David Metcalfe – has previously hinted that Val’s return was definitely possible.
He has said: “I think the whole show misses her. Emmerdaleneeds a character like Val. But have they really killed her off?
“[…] We never saw Val’s body; just a body bag being carried away, and Val was planning on faking her own death! We’ll see.”
