Al travelled to  space in 1971 as part of the Apollo 15 mission, but caused controversy when he was found trying to smuggle stamps aboard, allegedly planning to sell them when he returned.

Ben asked the 85-year-old about the incident, but was left stunned when Al snapped back at him, leaving a very awkward atmosphere in the GMB studio.

Ben asked: “There was a little scandal about your trip though, Al, because when you took some stamps and took some envelopes that you wanted to bring back…”

Al cut him off, saying: “Why do you want to talk about that?”

Visibly shocked, Ben attempted to justify the question, saying: “I think it’s part of the trip that people will remember as well because it wasn’t something that had happened before.

“I think previous trips had taken some pieces up which had then been sold.

“It’s just on your trip, you guys got pulled up for it.”

Al continued to be unimpressed with his interviewer when he used the phrase ‘you guys’.

Al replied: “It was the commander on the flight who did all that,” distancing himself from the scandal.
