Viewers have ridiculed BBC1’s major new Sunday night period drama The Woman in White after spotting “costume blunders”.
Laura, played by Olivia Vinall, was accused of wandering around in a “really inappropriate nightie” while Jessie Buckley’s character, Marian, flummoxed the audience by wearing trousers.
The five-part series, which also stars Charles Dance, Ben Hardy and Joanna Scanlan is an adaptation of Wilkie Collins’ gothic novel, set in the 1860s.
Many, though, believed the outfits were not faithful to the Victorian era.
One viewer said on Twitter: “I know Walter’s a bohemian fellow but him showing no surprise at all at Marian wearing trousers is a bit like someone today not being taken aback at a stranger walking around in her pants.”

Another asked: “How was she even allowed to wear trousers?”
People were equally baffled by the wardrobe department’s choice for Laura.
One asked: “I know how genteel laydees in mid 19th century England normally dress. So why is Laura floating about in just her nightgown? In front of Walter, too, shocking!”
“That nightie Laura’s prancing about in is really inappropriate for the times. Corset, underdress, overdress, top dress,” insisted another.
The debate about the finer details of the show, which the BBC publicised as “a haunting tale of insanity, identity and the role of women in society”, raged on Twitter.
Oh, I so wanted to like this … why do they feel the need to modernise so much? Have more faith in the story! Marian is awesome, you don’t need to stick her in trousers! #TheWomanInWhite
