Brenda Blethyn reveals she was rushed to hospital after medical emergency on set of Vera

'I was taken to hospital straight away'

Vera actor Brenda Blethyn previously revealed she was rushed to the hospital while filming on set.

The 78-year-old star has been playing the lead role of DCI Vera Stanhope in the ITV crime drama series since 2011. However, she will wave goodbye to the show in January after 14 years.

Vera star Brenda Blethyn suffered medical emergency on set

As Brenda reflects her on time on the show, she told The Sun earlier this month that she once had a medical emergency that resulted in her immediately being rushed to the hospital.

“I got Bell’s palsy during one episode and my face was all… I think it happened on camera.

“The makeup artist started to notice it. What’s wrong with Brenda’s face? She’s winking at everybody. I blink a lot but there was only one eye that was going.”

Brenda revealed the situation happened four or five years ago, insisting it was down to “bad luck”.

Unsure of what caused it, she believes it could have been due to an ear infection.

She continued: “But because it was dealt with immediately within the hour of it happening by a doctor [it wasn’t as bad] I was taken to hospital straight away.”

‘I missed my family’

After starring in Vera for 14 years, Brenda realised she wanted to step away from the show to spend more time with her family.

“It was a lovely summer back in 2023. And I came to realise I hadn’t had a summer with my husband for 14 years. Naturally, I missed my family. And my dog Jack, although he was with me in the North East, but I didn’t see him much because I was working all day,” she told PA.

“I love my Vera family, but I love my other family too. And when you consider I was already thinking about packing work in when I was offered the job back in 2010, 14 series of working on Vera is pretty good going. I wasn’t actually going to do any more after series 13, but of course ITV said they needed to wind the series up.

“So I said, ‘Oh go on then, I’ll do a couple more episodes.’”
