Brian Conley explains his Strictly exit ‘rant’

He thought he was being funny

| Updated:

He was the fourth celebrity to be voted off this year’s Strictly and it was reported yesterday that Brian Conley didn’t take the news too well.

Behind the scenes sources said the comedian launched into a foul-mouthed rant about the show following the dance-off, which was all edited out of the coverage broadcast to viewers.

Brian appeared on today’s Lorraine to “set the record straight”.

Speaking to Lorraine Kelly’s half-term stand-in Christine Lampard, he admitted he did tell presenter Tess Daly, “I haven’t finished” when she tried to usher him to do his final dance but he said his intention was to be funny.

“I didn’t have a rant, I was having a laugh that was all it was,” he explained.

“I wanted to diffuse everything, I didn’t want to finish on a downer.”

He admitted he thought the judges all looked “miserable” so he thought he would try to cheer them by up telling Darcey Bussell she was “very horny”.

“Everyone laughed,” he said.

He then said his expletive comments about the Strictly studio and the state of the toilets were also supposed to be taken in jest, as he was just trying to do what he does best and “be an entertainer.”

The actor said he was “upset” by how his comments have since been received, and how some have accused him of wanting to leave Strictly early because he was performing in panto over the Christmas period.

“So is Craig!” he pointed out of the judge before adding, “Also I am not taking over in Doctor Who – that’s Bradley Walsh! So I am free for the next few weeks.”

Brian said he was also annoyed by some who said he was being shown favourism because his brother is a floor manager on Strictly.

“That obviously wasn’t true as I am out!” he said.

He said he would have loved to have stayed longer but he knew “I wasn’t ever going to be in the last three, I can’t walk as good as Aston let alone as dance.”

Brian and his professional dance partner Amy Dowden were in the bottom two last weekend along with Sunday Brunch star Simon Rimmer.

Not all viewers were happy with the judges’ decision to vote Brian off, as they felt he was the better dancer after Simon slipped when performing his Charleston.
