Coronation Street boss Kate Oates reveals when she will be stepping down from her role

Kate has revealed being the boss at Corrie is a 'very intense job'

Soap boss Kate Oates might have one of the most exciting jobs in showbiz – but she has revealed that it can be so stressful that people never stay in the role for long.

During a chat with the Mirror recently, she admitted: “It’s a very intense job so people normally do it for about three years before moving on – and that’s what I’m planning.

“You have to remember all the time that you’re just looking after it for the next person. You want to do a solid job and hand it over in a healthy state.”

Kate has bought some of the biggest moments in recent Corrie history since starting at the soap – including Bethany Platt’s sexual abuse, David’s rape at the hands of supposed ‘friend’ Josh Tucker, and also Pat Phelan’s reign of terror.

The Corrie boss has been hit with claims that the show has got too dark and depressing, something that she has been quick to dismiss.

She has also been at the helm of the show for huge moments like the unveiling of the new Victoria Street set last week, and also the addition of the sixth episode that has been added to an already Corrie-packed week of TV scheduling.

Kate took over from former Corrie producer Stuart Blackburn in April 2016. So if she is sticking to the unofficial rule of three years, that could potentially mean that she’s thinking of departing the show next spring.

But the fact that most Corrie producers stay in the role for around three years isn’t a given – and there has been no official announcement of her departure.

With more huge storylines scheduled in for the coming year, it’s clear Kate doesn’t do things by halves – and generally, viewers love it.

Don’t go, Kate. We’d miss you!

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 7.30pm and 8.30pm on ITV.
