They took home an RTA award last night

Coronation Street silenced its critics last night by walking away with a prestigious award from the Royal Television Society at a posh awards bash in London.

The ITV soap walked home with the gong for best soap and continuing drama from the event with judges praising the show for its ‘grounded, confident and utterly believable drama.’

Executive producer Kate Oates said: “Obviously, Royal Television Society are so well-established, it’s a panel vote which is really nice. It’s industry professionals so it’s nice to feel that we’ve won it from a nice respective panel of experts.

“It’s a real honour.”

Actress Sue Cleaver who plays Eileen Grimshaw added: “What’s really lovely is that every day, we are bombarded with, ‘the storyline’s too dark’ or ‘what’s going on in soap’.

“And well, there’s your answer guys.”

Although not at the ceremony – held at the swanky Grosvenor Hotel – Kym Marsh took to Twitter to show her support to the show she’s starred in for more than a decade.

She wrote: “I am so very proud to be a part of this tremendous show!!! I love you @itvcorrie.”

It’s a triumph for Corrie who has suffered something of a backlash from fans over the past few months over its so-called dark storylines.

Lots of viewers and even some famous fans have slammed stories such as Bethany Platt’s grooming and David Platt’s recent rape for not being in fitting with the Corrie of old.

The most controversial storyline has to be that of Pat Phelan and his murderous spree, which comes to a head next week.
