Coronation Street star Sue Nicholls admits she ‘knows the staff in her local Sainsbury’s better than new cast’

Cast turnover is much higher these days thanks to the likes of Pat Phelan...

Coronation Street veteran, Sue Nicholls, who plays cobbles favourite Audrey Roberts, has joked that there are so many new faces in the Corrie green room that she knows the staff at her local supermarket better than some of her co-stars.

Corrie has been under fire recently for producing too many dark storylines, and it is because of these plots that the turnover of cast is so high.

If Pat Phelan stopped killing characters off, maybe Sue would have a chance to get to know other actors better!

Sue, who has played beloved Audrey for 39 years, told the Daily Star: “I seem to know the people at my local Sainsbury’s more than I know half of the new Coronation Street cast. What can I say?”

The actress also reminisced about when Corrie had classic stars like Pat Phoenix who played Elsie Tanner, Jean Alexander who played Hilda Ogden and Betty Driver who was better known as Betty Williams among it’s cast.

Back in those days, cast used to join a show like Corrie and were in it for the long haul. Sue told the newspaper: “Ah the days of Pat Phoenix. Pat was so easy to work with. And there was Jean Alexander and Betty Driver.

“It was a lovely time.”

This isn’t the first time that big names have taken a swipe at the show for losing it’s classic Corrie touch.

Former This Morning presenter, Fern Britton, recently slammed the show for being ‘unsuitable for pre watershed viewing’ following David Platt’s sexual abuse at the hands of newcomer Josh Tucker.

The ITV presenter even tweeted the show with her disappointment, adding the hashtag #SaveOurCorrie.

Chat show host Sir Michael Parkinson has also compared Corrie to a ‘horror show’ in the past, and crime novelist Martina Cole begged the show to return to its ‘wonder days of Ken and Deirdre’.

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 7.30pm and 8.30pm on ITV.
