In a statement, Kieran said: “This has been a huge and very difficult decision and it’s one I have been thinking about for more than a year.”

In fact, he’s stayed on with the soap longer than he planned so he could help the cast and crew transition to the new six episodes a week schedule.

He explained: “When the move to six episodes was announced I knew I should stay to help make that happen.

“I’ve been incredibly lucky to have worked on so many wonderful programmes and with so many brilliant colleagues during my time at ITV.

“Coronation Street is a special place and it’s been a huge privilege working on such an amazing programme with the greatest team in television.”

Soap fans have Kieran to thank for some incredible soap storylines over the years – particularly since his pairing with executive producer Kate Oates.

The dream team have delivered the critically acclaimed Bethany grooming plot; Phelan holding Andy hostage and Eva’s scheming against cheating Aidan in the past year alone.

It’s a big loss to the Corrie family – and great news for whoever’s pastures he is moving onto!
