The future of Death in Paradise looks uncertain as a series 13 hasn’t yet been commissioned.
Boss Tim Key has admitted that he still hasn’t had confirmation on whether Death in Paradise will be renewed.
Although Tim would love to make more Death in Paradise, BBC One has not yet made a decision on any upcoming series.
Here’s what we know about a possible series 13 of Death in Paradise.
Death in Paradise series 13: Will it happen?
Death in Paradise boss Tim Key recently spoke to the Radio Times about the future of the show.
Tim said: “I don’t know about another renewal but we’re ready to do it again if we’re asked to do it again.”
And in an apparent plea to fans remaining loyal, he added: “We’re going to keep on going as long as people watch the show, and loads of people watch the show – we love it!
“So we’ll keep making it as long as the audience loves watching it.”
Will Ralf Little return as DI Neville Parker?
Actor Ralf Little, who plays DI Neville Parker in the hit BBC One series, has not confirmed if he’ll be back.
He recently took part in a press Q&A, where a viewer asked if he could reveal whether he would be leaving the show anytime soon.
However, Ralf was tight-lipped about his future on the show.
He said: “Look, cards on the table, this happens every year and it doesn’t mean anything.
“There’s nothing to read into this either way.
“All of those talks and negotiations – not even negotiations, we aren’t at that stage yet – it’s not like you get signed on like a footballer, where you get signed a five-year contract or a three-year contract or whatever.”
He went on to say that “no decision has been made yet”.
What happened in series 12 of Death in Paradise?
Of course, Death in Paradise fans will know that the latest series of the BBC One show has teased Neville’s possible departure.
First, Neville fell for Mancunian Sophie Chambers, played by Chelsea Edge.
Fans feared that he would follow his heart and return to the UK to be with her.
However, Sophie returned to Saint Marie, saving Neville the trip.
It seemed love had finally landed at Neville’s feet…
Until a shocking storyline saw Sophie revealed as a murderer!
So much for your detective skills, Neville!
Since then, Neville has been tormented with bad memories, and has toyed with leaving the island.
Criticism of the BBC One series
The BBC One series has its fair share of critics.
The Independent described the show as “not much more than a lavish brochure for the local tourist boards”.
Ouch!
Meanwhile, the Guardian called it “the TV equivalent of a boring holiday timeshare”.
In 2022, actress Josephine Jobert was forced to defend the show from a brutal fan backlash.
The show has also been in the centre of a race row over the course of its 12 year history.
Some viewers object to the way a white man arrives in Saint Marie to solve cases.
Digital Spy recently argued that it’s time for a black senior detective to lead the show.
Dare we say a female, black detective?
