Martin Shaw discusses Inspector George Gently’s finale on This Morning

The actor appeared on the show to talk about the last ever episode

Fan favourite BBC drama Inspector George Gently starring Martin Shaw and Lee Ingleby comes to an end tonight.

Martin Shaw appeared on This Morning today to talk about the show’s final episode – but it looked like he might have given away the ending.

Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby chatted to the star and Phil asked him why the 70s-set detective drama was coming to an end.

“I’m not stopping it, I would have continued,” he admitted.

“However, it’s entirely appropriate it’s finished, 10 years is a long time to be doing something, personally it makes time for other stuff, and the BBC wants room for other things too.”

But Phillip clearly wasn’t happy that the series was coming to an end and he pressed: “He could have become a chief constable?”

“I would have said it would be unwise,” Martin replied. “For me everything starts and finishes with the script, if there was a scenario where a great script involved the chief constable that would be a different issue.”

Speaking of filming the final scenes, Martin said: “We held off on emotion until the actual moment. That last day it was pouring with rain, lousy weather and suddenly they said, ‘cut, it’s a wrap’ and you go ‘oh my’.”

Phil was keen to find out if there was any way the series could return at some point, probing as to whether the inspector will survive given he’s suffering from MS.

The host started by asking whether when “cut” was shouted at the end, George was standing up, to which Martin replied he was.

Thinking he’d figured it out, a pleased Phil said: “Then he could come back.”

But Martin dashed his hopes by saying: “There is no way he could come back.”

Phil persisted: “He was standing up at the time, he’s not dead then?”

“He was underneath a black cover smoking a cigarette,” Martin said.

Eh? Is he dead or not?

It seems Holly couldn’t figure it out either as she said he was “throwing red herrings out there”.

The segment ended with the presenters saying they’d miss the show.

“I shall miss it too,” said Martin.
