Marcella fans were left dumbfounded last night as it was revealed SHE was responsible for the death of her baby Juliette.
The hardbitten but emotionally fractured detective played by Anna Friel was able to rescue son Edward from being tortured by Jane Colletti – but shocking scenes showing what happened to her infant daughter almost pushed the series’ major plotline to the side in the last episode of the ITV thriller’s second run.
The mystery was finally solved when Marcella consulted a therapist under hypnosis and managed to retrieve hidden and repressed memories.

In flashbacks to the day of Juliette’s death, Marcella was seen trying to soothe a bawling baby.
But it seems Juliette died by her mother’s own hands, with the suggestion Marcella had smothered her to death.
The revelation proved too much for a distressed Marcella who seemed ready to jumped from the roof of the police station and take her own life until colleague DI Rav Sangha intervened and talked her down.

“My baby Juliet… she wouldn’t stop screaming, I was so tired,” she confessed.
“I just wanted her to stop.”
However, Marcella seemingly had no intention of handing herself in.
Belting Rav with the lid of a toilet cistern, Marcella went on to cut her hair and brutally slash her own mouth with scissors before going on the run.
A colleague discovered her sleeping rough under train arches and informed Marcella she was presumed dead after an abandoned house used by squatters was destroyed in a fire.
He told her: “The bodies were so badly burned, they had to use DNA to identify them.
“Couldn’t match two of them, but they were able to identify the third. Marcella Backland – DS Marcella Backland.
The officer continued: “For some reason there’s been a mixup with the DNA. So now, you’re dead.
“The department I work for could use a dead police officer to go undercover. What do you say?”
While viewers welcome a potential third series for an ‘undercover’ Marcella, ITV are yet to confirm the show will return.
But will viewer’s questions about this head-scratching, layered and elusive drama ever get answered?
Thought Twitter would help my #Marcella confusion but it’s added a few more questions to the mix. I do think Jason’s fiancée is more linked to it all, she recommended the therapist after all… pic.twitter.com/3mzgtkaygF

Dear #marcella scriptwriters, pls ensure all loose ends are tied up without any nebulous finale in the name of an anticipated 3rd series. I’ve invested 7 hours in a place of fear, confusion & speculation. Expectations are high. Just saying.

#Marcella Weird ending but it leaves it open for a new series with new colleagues and no family. Undercover Marcella.
