Eagle-eyed Doc Martin viewers expose show’s super-rude character names!

Actress has confessed to the 'punny' crime

| Updated:

It’s never been known as a show with a particularly hard-hitting agenda.

But fans of Doc Martin have spotted some very cheeky lines inserted by the show’s writers.

Some of the characters who have been seen by the grumpy medic include Anita Bush, Drew Peacock and most childishly, Ben Twilley.

And other pun-tastic names to have come through Doc’s surgery include Theresa Green and Dan Gleballs.

Jessica Ransom, who plays receptionist Morwenna Newcross on the show, said that everyone was in on the joke.

She said: “We always put in funny patient names, we’ve had a lot of fun putting a few of those in. We had a nice old lady the other day who was Alice Cooper.”

Fans have also been paying tribute to the cheeky gags, with one viewer admitting they were “loving” the funny names.

Show star Martin Clunes confirmed earlier this year that the show will run through its ninth season in 2018 – which will also be its last.

It first aired in 2004, and fans may not know that the character they’ve grown to love (or at least tolerate) is very different from how he was first imagined.

Instead of being a grumpy curmudgeon, Martin was originally envisaged as a happy-go-lucky chap, delighted to have left city life behind him.

But when the show was picked up by ITV, bosses and Martin Clunes felt he’d be better as a grump – and viewers agreed.

The current series is airing on ITV now, and we can’t wait to see if the writers have stuck in any more funny names.

We’d like to suggest some, but worry they wouldn’t be family-friendly enough for an early-evening comedy!
