Eamonn Holmes doesn’t hold back in cheeky swipe at Strictly’s Anton du Beke

Poor Anton!

Eamonn Holmes had a hilarious but brutal dig at Strictly star Anton du Beke on today’s This Morning.

The professional ballroom dancer was on to discuss the success of his debut novel, One Enchanted Evening.

But Eamonn didn’t hold back when he told Anton, rather coolly: “It must be nice, bearing in mind your Strictly career, to be successful at something.”

Anton took it well and all three of them burst out laughing at the jibe.

Poor Anton has never yet had the honour of lifting the coveted Glitterball trophy.

He’s been knocked out in the early stages of the competition many times, including in the 2018 series, when he and celeb partner Susannah Constantine were the first to leave.

The year before that, Anton was partnered with This Morning’s own Ruth Langsford, but they came ninth.

His best ever series was the first, back in 2004, when he came third with singer Lesley Garrett. He also made the final in 2015 with Katie Derham.

Anton told the presenters of his elation at producing a bestseller novel.

He explained: “When you do anything like this, you know, you do it hoping it’s a success.

“For it to be a bestseller… when it got into the chart there on the Sunday Times and the publishers called me to say ‘We’ve got some great news’, I was so delighted and elated… I was thrilled.”

Discussing the book’s plot, set in the 1930s, he said the story’s been “milling around in [his] head for years” and was inspired by the people he’s met and stories about “inedible people” he’s heard over the years.

He said: “It’s not autobiographical but I call it the story of my life.”

Eamonn asked him if Ruth would feature in his second book, due out later this year, and Anton revealed that they’re both going to be making an appearance.

Ruth asked him if their fictional counterparts “get on” and Anton told her: “Tremendously well. They eat at separate ends of the dining table.”
