They’re one of soapland’s most celebrated couples, but were EastEnders’ Kat and Alfie Moon almost never an item?
Shane Richie, who played the loveable sometime landlord, has got fans talking after a mysterious tweet called everything into question.
The star, 53, posted an image of himself with Barbara Windsor, who famously played Peggy Mitchell on the soap for around 16 years before leaving in 2010 and returning occasionally before the character was finally killed off last year.

Shane commented that a storyline that “would have changed everything” was “talked about but never came to screen”, but didn’t give any further clues.
Of course, that got fans speculating as to what might have been and they came up with a few suggestions!
The most popular theories were that Babs’ Peggy was actually Shane/ Alfie’s long lost mum, or that she was going to have him as her toyboy lover!
Either way, they were very keen to hear all about it from Shane, but the star was staying silent after that.
Shane starred as Alfie from 2002 to 2005, then left before a return in 2010 and another exit in 2016 alongside his on-screen wife, Kat, played by Jessie Wallace.
The pair won their own spin-off series, Kat and Alfie: Redwater, which saw them searching for Kat’s long-lost son in Ireland where things took a very dark turn indeed.
The show wasn’t exactly a hit, but Shane recently confirmed that the fictional pair are still alive, indicating that he’d love to return to EastEnders as Alfie, saying: “If I got the phone call to come back, I’d love the idea.”

As long as he tells us all about that storyline with Babs first, we’d love it too, Shane!
