EastEnders SPOILER: Carmel is on a mission

She's determined to get knives off the streets

| Updated:

Grieving Carmel Kazemi is determined to get knives off the streets in EastEnders next week following the tragic murder of her son Shakil.

Fans were left horrified last week when Shakil and his friend Keegan Baker were both brutally stabbed after a gang followed Keegan back to Albert Square after he stole a bike.

She makes a knife-surrender bin and installs it in the Community Centre so knives can be dropped in anonymously.

Ian steps in and offers to help Carmel with her campaign by arranging a meeting with a local MP.

But later, she’s left upset by Ian’s plans for her campaign against knife crime as she fears it might stop people coming forward.

She then buckles under pressure at the Community Centre when she’s bombarded with questions about the knife surrender box as she hosts a meeting about getting knives off the streets.

Meanwhile the knife story has attracted some criticism from fans who were confused about Mick Carter being so heavily involved in the storyline.

While Bonnie Langford’s acting as Shakil’s devastated mother Carmel has been widely praised, other characters seem to have been sidelined to allow Mick to be involved.

Viewers watched as Mick found Keegan after he was stabbed, but turned away Shakil as he begged for help while he was dying.

Fans have hit out at scenes in the hospital where instead of Shakil’s brother Kush being the focus, Mick was.

Writing on Digital Spy’s forums, one said: “It felt wrong they were in the same scene with the Kazemis.

“The producers can’t resist having the Carters involved.”

Another added: “Definitely. Karen was barely in it. Keegan might be OK but being the mum of a stabbing victim deserves far more screen time in the immediate aftermath, rather than the local landlord.”

A third wrote: “Shakil never had anything to do with Mick in life so I fail to see why he should have anything to do with Mick in death.

“He doesn’t belong in this storyline and I hope they don’t go on and on about him feeling guilty.”
