Emmerdale’s Ryan Hawley teases Robert Sugden’s dark return after Aaron split

The character’s recent heartbreak has driven him to villainy

Emmerdale’s Ryan Hawley has warned that Robert Sugden is about to go back to his old destructive ways now that he has split with Aaron Dingle.

The fan favourite couple broke up recently over Robert having fathered a baby with his ex Rebecca White while Aaron was in prison, and now Hawley says that his character will be displaying much rougher edges and will be the cause of a potentially devastating accident.

Robert has been living at the B&B since the split, but has been helping out Rebecca at Home Farm following all the drama with Lawrence resulting in her dad being in hospital.

When Lawrence is released, Robert isn’t overly happy about it, thinking he was going to be in charge much longer.

So he starts making sure he’s needed and will be seen sneaking sleeping tablets into Lawrence’s booze bottles in a bid to slow down his recovery.

However, Lawrence comes round from his stupor just as a zombie run is getting under way at Home Farm.

In his confused state, Lawrence gets into his car, still in his pyjamas, and heads off to find out what all the noise is. He’s far too groggy to be driving, and is soon careering straight towards Belle Dingle, Lachlan White and Victoria Barton.

The actor said: “Robert’s always had that ruthless, self-serving side to him as a character and now he’s not with Aaron, who brought out the softer side in him, we’re starting to see a bit more of the old Robert.

“He wants as much as he can get.”

Hawley continued: “He’s in the B&B, not living in a nice house with all the things around him that he wants.

“He is the kind of guy who’s going to screw people over to get ahead and to get all those possessions and that power that he wants.

“So you could say he’s on a path to self-destruction because he’ll do anything at whatever cost, no matter how threatening it is to him, and it’s all with the aim of improving his living standards.
