Ross, played by Mike Parr, has been struggling with his confidence since he was the victim of a brutal acid attack last month.

It seemed he was starting to feel more like himself after a skin draft gave him hope that his horrific facial injuries could be improved.

During last night’s episode he was delighted when a girl started chatting him up, but devastated when it turned out she was just doing it for a bet.

At the end of the episode Ross was seen speeding out of the village, with a bottle of whisky in the passenger seat.

Tonight will see his brother Pete become panicked when he realises Ross, the booze and his car are all missing.

He goes off in search of him and will eventually discover his broken brother has tried to take his own life.

As well as the whisky, Ross will take a handful of pills, and by the time Pete finds him – and his car – he’s already  barely conscious.

As Ross’s life hangs in the balance, Pete cradles him in his arms.
