Eurovision viewers called for the UK to stop entering the song contest after coming in at last place in last night’s show.
The UK’s entrant, Michael Rice, ended up at the bottom of the pile, with a total of 16 points for his performance of Bigger Than Us.

The Netherlands walked away with the win, with their entrant Duncan Laurence awarded 492 for the song Arcade.
The UK hasn’t won the competition in over 20 years – with their last victory coming in 1997, when Katrina and the Waves performed Love Shine a Light.

They came in as runners up the following year.
After the UK’s disappointing performance in the show, fans took to twitter to express their outrage, with some claiming that the votes were purely political, and showed Europe’s impatience with the UK in the wake of the Brexit vote.
#Eurovision idea: to test how politically everyone votes, can the UK one year just throw Ed Sheeran in and see how badly he does?? Because if he finishes last, then we know something’s up

UK last in #Eurovision – what possible reason could Europe have to not like us?

Others took issue with the performance itself, claiming that it didn’t suit the over-the-top style of the competition.
Still seeing the usual political arguments online, but I think more people are now criticising the selection (and finally realising) that if the UK send absolute dirge then we’ll do poorly. #Eurovision

Before anybody blames politics: the UK enters weak songs and stages them poorly and that is why we perform badly. #Eurovision #GBR

Some viewers even claimed that the UK should stop competing at all – and stop giving money to the event.
UK came last in #Eurovision. They hate us now. The youth of that continent serially vote the UK down. Let’s move on. Let’s have an Anglophone Song Contest of the USA and the Commonwealth. Much more “diversity” than 20-odd politically correct Europop entries.

#eurovision THE uk should leave THE eurovision contest. After brexit they now have eurexit!

I’m convinced that if Ed Sheeran, Adele, Sam Smith, Rag n Bone Man, the new Beatles the new Oasis or any popular singer/band entered #Eurovision the Uk still wouldn’t win. Time to stop bothering #political

Why do we even bother with this joke competition. Do we really need to be at a party that no one wants us at. We have the best bands/solo artist in the world. Let them have their silly event. We could put Adele in it and still come last. #politicalbollocks #Eurovision

UK shud leave the #Eurovision but we wud probably make a hash of that as well #Brexit

This year’s competition was marred by political turmoil as fans objected to the show being hosted in Israel, due to the treatment of the Palestinian people currently under Israeli occupation.
The Icelandic contestants, Hatari, held up Palestinian flags as their score was announced, and during her interval performance, Madonna included two back up dancers wearing Palestinian and Israeli flags.

Protests were also held outside the venue in Expo Tel Aviv and Habima Square, calling for a removal of blockades from Gaza, while Palestinian musicians staged a protest concert.
In addition, online campaigns called for a boycott of the show.
