Former EastEnders star Joe Absolom hits out at dark soap storylines

He thinks they can be a bit hardcore

Former EastEnders actor Joe Absolom has spoken out about the dark storylines which seem to be taking over Soap Land at the moment.

The star, who played Matthew Rose in the BBC One soap, told OK! Online that he thinks the dark storylines can be a bit much for the time they’re on.

He added that he’s reluctant to let his 11-year-old daughter watch some soaps because they’re a bit hardcore.

Joe said: “I’ve got an 11 year old who is obsessed with EastEnders, but I don’t like her watching it as some things can be pretty hardcore.

“I think personally as a father some issues on soaps are a little too much for that time of the day.”

Joe’s character Matthew was involved in his share of dark storylines when he appeared on Eastenders back in the late 90s.

He was involved in a story where Steve Owen (Martin Kemp) murdered his girlfriend by clocking her around the head with an ashtray.

The pair then buried her dead body in Epping Forest in grisly scenes that shocked at the time.

Later, Steve framed Matthew for the murder, even though he just witnessed it.

Soaps have come under fire recently for dark plotlines, with Coronation Street in particular drawing in complaints.

Fans have felt stories such as Phelan’s murder spree, Bethany Platt’s grooming ordeal and now David Platt’s rape are too much for a family soap.

EastEnders has had its fair share of dark storylines recently too – with evil gangster Aidan Maguire menacing around the Square and beating up Mick Carter.
