Gardeners’ World host Monty Don’s concerns for King Charles over cancer diagnosis: ‘I hope to God he isn’t very ill’

Gardeners’ World host Monty Don previously shared his concerns over King Charles’ cancer diagnosis.

The King was diagnosed with an unspecified form of cancer earlier this year. He then underwent outpatient treatment in London.

As expected, the nation was heartbroken to hear the news at the time about Charles, including his friend Monty Don – who is on Gardeners’ World today (August 23).

Gardeners’ World host Monty Don on ‘well-informed’ Charles

Speaking to Telegraph in February 2024, Monty gushed over King Charles‘ “incredibly impressive” gardening skills.

The horticulturist noted how the royal is “very well-informed” and “does his homework thoroughly”.

Monty also candidly opened up about how gardening has helped him through the darker periods in his life – describing gardens as a “source of comfort”.

“They are places where the pressures and the strains of the world can either be held at bay or put into context. All gardeners understand that,” he explained.

Then, talking about the King’s recent cancer diagnosis, Monty said: “The King knows that gardening is an investment in a creative future. You plant a plant, you sow a seed, and in time it will grow. It is a recipe for hope, if you are very ill. And I hope to God the King isn’t very ill, I hope to God it’s just a scare.

“But gardening also gives you perspective. Life goes on, both within and without you. I know the King completely understands this, that you are a small part of something much bigger. To garden is to know that, be you ever so high or ever so low, we are all an equal part of it,” he added.

‘Remorseless treadmill’

Since his first appearance on TV screens back in 1989, Monty has become one of Britain’s favourite horticulturists. Not only has he been presenting Gardeners’ World since 2003, but he’s also had a ton of other TV shows.

However, last year, he hinted at his departure from the show as he approaches his seventies – and even dubbed the series as a “remorseless treadmill.”

But recently, Monty hit back at the “slack” he got for his comments and revealed his future on the BBC show.

Gardeners’ World airs on Fridays on BBC One at 8pm. It’s repeated Saturday mornings on BBC Two.
