Grantchester star Tom Brittney, known for playing Reverend Will Davenport, looks unrecognisable as he takes on a new role.
Tom, 32, joined the ITV detective drama starring Robson Green for 2019’s fourth series. He has remained in the lead role of Reverend Will until series 8, which aired on telly over the summer.
However, it was confirmed as series 9 started filming back in July that the next run will be Tom’s final one. And that’s because Tom wants to dip his toes into other roles, and take on new projects.
‘It is time for the baton to be passed’
Tom, who as Reverend Will replaced James Norton’s character Sidney Chambers in the Grantchester cast, said earlier this year: “I’ve had the most incredible time playing Will Davenport for the last five years. I got to solve crimes with my best friend, and work with the best cast and crew I could ever ask for.”
Hyping actor Rishi Nair, who joins as vicar Alphy Kotteram, Tom added at the time: “I’ll miss it more than anything. But it’s time for the baton to be passed, as it once was to me, and I’m so excited for Rishi to join the Grantchester family.”
Going by Tom’s Instagram, new projects certainly look to be happening.
A recent post showed him with a thick beard, and wearing a Vans cap and Thrasher T-shirt… and no clerical collar in sight!

How fans reacted
Tom’s followers were keen to find out more about what he occupying his time doing.
“Have you stepped into the director’s chair this time around?” one commenter asked.
Another wrote: “What are you directing Tom?”
And a third remarked: “Not sure what is happening but it looks strategic and intense.”
If he is directing in the image he shared, it won’t be an entirely new experience for him as he was previously credited with directing an episode of Grantchester in series 7.
Will Davenport in a Thrasher tee?
Others fans made mention of his very different look to Reverend Will.
“Will Davenport in a Thrasher tee? Love the artistic variety, much respect,” one said.
And another complimented him: “The beard is on point. Nice!”
