After Greg Rutherford was forced to pull out of the 2024 Dancing On Ice final due to injury, he’s now revealed he’s in talks to return to the series.
Olympian Greg was forced to bow out of the series finale earlier this year, leading the way clear for Ryan Thomas to scoop the trophy.
However, fast-forward a few months and Greg’s healed from the horror injury, and planning his skating comeback.
‘I’d give it another go’
Speaking this week, Greg said he’s in the early stages to return to the show in 2025. However, he won’t be able to pick up where he left off. Instead, Greg is eyeing a one-off performance to show viewers what they missed out on seeing in the final.
In a chat on Lorraine earlier this week, Greg – on The Weakest Link this weekend (July 20) – said: “It’s been early stage discussed whether or not I come back and do one skate maybe…
“I’d love to give it another go. It was something I didn’t expect to enjoy as much as I did and that was the interesting thing for me.”
Lasting impact
Greg also shared how the incident is still causing problems now. He said: “I had to have surgery to repair the injuries so I had some pretty nasty hernias form and I also detached my lower left ab which was less than ideal.
Poor Greg suffered an injury meaning he had to miss the Dancing On Ice final earlier this year. Instead, Ryan Thomas, Adele Roberts and Miles Nazaire battled it out for the trophy. Ryan was crowed the 2024 Dancing On Ice winner.
After the final, Greg said he had suffered a “rough night” after being hospitalised. Days later, he then admitted his stomach was “not in a good way”.

He said at the time: “Today is surgery day. Loads of people have been asking, ‘What happened?’ I’ve been a bit busy and obviously just recovering from the initial injury before I had the surgery that I hadn’t got round to really talking about it.”
Greg continued: “Long story short, I leapt through the legs of Brendyn [Hatfield] and Colin [Grafton] and managed to tear all of my abs as well as herniate. So I effectively gave myself a C-section.
For the next few days I’m going to be very sore.
“So yes, horribly painful. It needs to be operated on today and then I’ll be properly on the mend. It was very painful, pretty horrible.”
Posting a series of pictures from his hospital bed, he said: “Operation done. Recovery starts here. Thank you for all your messages. It was a slightly bigger op than originally hoped, but it’s all sorted.”
Dancing On Ice statement
Dancing On Ice said in a statement about Greg at the time: “Sadly Olympian Greg Rutherford MBE has had to withdraw from Dancing On Ice after sustaining an injury whilst in rehearsals for the final episode of the current series.
“Greg and Vanessa have been such a popular couple this series and have performed some truly memorable routines.
“We will be helping to support Greg and wish him well with his recovery. We also want to thank him for being such a treasured member of the Dancing on Ice family.”
The next series airs on ITV1 early in 2025.
