This Morning viewers in uproar over poppy debate

Holly Willoughby also made her point

This Morning viewers have been left fuming after a guest on the show suggested that wearing a red poppy “glorifies war”.

The controversial interview on the ITV show earlier today left both Holly, and the viewers watching, horrified as Adam Spiers explained he will be wearing a white poppy, instead of the traditional red one.

Adam explained his white poppy represents peace, and added he would be more likely to wear the “traditional” offering if he felt the British Legion wasn’t “problematic”.

“The British Legion accept sponsorship from a number of arms manufacturers and in 2012 their president needed to resign so I do think whilst I respect the idea of remembrance, I’m not looking to disrespect anyone.”

When Phil asked if it was the red colour of it, Adam replied: “No, it’s not the colour of it.

“If the British Legion wasn’t involved in other problematic areas then I would wear the red poppy but it’s because of these other issues.”

“There was a photo on the British Legion website that had children wearing future soldier T-shirts and I think that’s a problem,” he added.

But fellow guest John Nichol, who is a former member of the RAF and wears a red poppy, responded, “You can’t criticise a young man for wanting to be in the military.

“You are absolutely entitled to the point of view, but you can’t blame this person for wanting to emulate their forefathers.”

Holly also joined the argument – making a very good point, “My son wears a shirt with a fire engine on because he wants to be a firefighter.”

The meaning behind the red poppy comes from the First World War poem, In Flanders Fields, by John McCrae.

This Morning viewers weren’t happy about the white poppy, referencing Flanders’ Field, where red poppies grew…

And viewer’s didn’t stop there with sharing their opinion on This Morning’s controversial guest. Fan’s of the show took to social media in their droves to back up Holly’s point…

There were a few people, however, who could see the other side of the argument.

Former soldier, John, also told Holly and Phil, “This is about remembrance. People might be surprised to hear that there has only been one year where a service man or woman hasn’t died at war.”

When asked if he found the white poppy offensive, John replied: “I would fight to the death for Adam to wear his white poppy.
