Kate Garraway fans fire back as she’s cruelly trolled over emotional NTAs win with children Billy and Darcey

Derek's Story won the Authored Documentary award

Kate Garraway won an award at the NTAs last night for her incredibly powerful documentary about her late husband Derek Draper.

ITV documentary Derek’s Story won the Authored Documentary award at the ceremony. It aired earlier this year and followed Kate and Derek’s final chapter together. The documentary also focused on carers as Kate looked into the impact of what a carer entails.

Derek died in January aged 56. He had been receiving round-the-clock care following his battle with Covid-19.

On Wednesday night (September 11), Kate‘s documentary won the Authored Documentary award at the National Television Awards.

Getting up on stage alongside her children – Darcey, 18, and Billy, 15, – Kate became emotional. She said: “As you can tell by the dishevelled appearance, I really, genuinely, did not expect this.

“It’s a bittersweet one. It’s very bitter to be here with the gorgeous Darcey and Billy, come forward. I promised them they don’t have to say anything.”

She continued: “We’re half-way through the first year of firsts without Derek. It’s so strange to be here for the first Television Awards without him.

“But this one is for you, Derek,” as she lifted the award into the air.

Kate said: “We’ve all been vulnerable, we’ve all struggled, we’ve all lost someone or grieving someone and it’s okay to feel those things.

Wow! Seeing such vile comments about Kate Garraway. She lost her husband. Her kids lost their dad.

“We need a system that catches us when we fall, not tries to catch us out. We’re going to keep the right on for all of you.”

Despite Kate’s well-deserved win, some trolls lashed out on X. One person said: “Ffs Kate Garraway winning. People are sick of hearing it now.”

Another wrote: “Here comes another book or TV documentary to cash in on.”

However, it wasn’t long before Kate’s fans jumped in to defend the star against the backlash. One hit back: “Wow! Seeing such vile comments about Kate Garraway. She lost her husband. Her kids lost their dad.

“She cared for him until the end. She continued working through it all. Some on social media are very disrespectful.”

Another tweeted: “Well done Kate. Up yours to the haters.”

Meanwhile, another added: “Kate deserves this award after highlighting care in this country and how normal people struggle with caring for loved ones. Just beautiful her children are with her @kategarraway.”

She said: “It was very emotional for us. It feels odd when people says congratulations. The kids burst into tears backstage, and Billy said, ‘I did want to speak,’ neither of them wanted to speak [at the time].”

“[Billy] wanted to say, ‘Dad lives on in our hearts,’ and I said, ‘I’m so glad you didn’t because that would have floored me and I wouldn’t have been able to speak.'”
