Katherine Kelly makes big Corrie announcement

Is there a future for Becky McDonald on the cobbles?

| Updated:

Becky McDonald will forever have a place in our hearts and we will never stop hoping that she decides to chuck in her life in Barbados and head back to Weatherfield. What? It’s not that unlikely is it?

Well, sadly it seems that Becky won’t be making that leap any time soon. Actress Katherine Kelly who played the mouthy McDonald woman, has spoken out about making a cobbles comeback.

Speaking to the Mirror, she said: “I see them a lot but it’s different, they’re in a different place.

“It doesn’t seem like that job exists any more.

“It’s that thing of, you go somewhere amazing on holiday and think, ‘Let’s go again next year’. It’s never as good.”

Boo. But it’s not all bad news as Katherine will be back on screens soon in Sky One’s drama Strike Back.

She will play ex-soldier, Jane Lowry, also known as Jihadi Jane.

Her character has converted to Islam after falling in love with a Muslim fanatic.

Katherine spoke out about playing a villain. She said: “It’s totally different to anything I’ve done before, which is why I took it, for the challenge.

“This is the first thing I’ve done that’s international, with a massive international cast.

“I imagine people will watch and not realise it’s me.”

She also spoke out about the physical demands of the role and how it was Jennifer Lawrence’s trainer who helped get her in shape.

“They have a trainer that everybody seems to turn to in the industry, like Jennifer Lawrence two months ago,” she said.

“It’s like, ‘Oh, he’s at the gym, waiting for you’. You go every day, lift weights, boxing and fighting with knives and sticks.”

Katherine jumped straight into the gruelling role, shortly after giving birth to her daughter, Rose, who’s now a year old.

She said she still very much had her baby body when she began filming, something she makes no apologies for.

She added: “They knew when they asked me to consider the role that I’d just had a baby – so I’m not going to have a Strike Back body that people watching are going to expect.

“With your clothes on you can get away with it, but there are certain things that are just never going to go back.”

Katherine gave birth to Rose last October, her second baby with husband, Ryan Clarke.

Proving that it is possible to be in the public eye and still maintain a private life, Katherine didn’t announce the birth of her second daughter until she was three months old.

The Happy Valley star told OK magazine she had a water birth at London’s Whittington Hospital on October 21 saying: “It was a rush to get to the hospital and by the time we were checked in, Rose was born within 1hr and 40 mins!”

“We didn’t go out of our way to keep it a secret but we didn’t announce the pregnancy so people were not immediately on bump watch.

“It’s been wonderful to have this precious time just for us.”

The star of now-axed BBC3 Doctor Who spin-off Class Tweeted about her new arrival.

She also revealed not being one of Corrie’s biggest stars any more has helped her keep things private.

“It is different if you are in something like Corrie, as you can’t keep it quiet. It leaks within a second as paparazzi are always at the gates.”
