Killing Eve finale sparks fan outrage, differs from book ending

Even the book's author has spoken out!

The ending of Killing Eve – which aired tonight (April 23) on BBC One and dropped earlier this week on iPlayer – proved to be controversial with the show’s die-hard fans.

While some understood what happened, others are raging about the episode’s final moments.

But did it differ from the book, and was the final death in the Killing Eve finale faked?

Does Killing Eve end the same in the book?

Surprisingly, Villanelle did not die in the book.

The book does include Villanelle getting shot and Eve grieving her loss.

However, Villanelle’s death turns out to be faked. The two lovers then go on to have a peaceful life together in St Petersburg together.

Carolyn, the woman behind Villanelle’s murder in the show, doesn’t actually exist in the book. Neither does her son, Kenny.

So while the book ends on a happier note for the characters, the TV show leaves a rather sad future for Eve.

Why was Killing Eve cancelled?

The decision to end the show came from the creative team.

“Killing Eve exploded in popular culture and attracted a dedicated and committed fan base from its very first episode,” said AMC Networks president Dan McDermott.

He added: “Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s brilliant adaptation of the source material, the unforgettable characters are given life by Sandra Oh and Jodie Comer, and the entire cast, along with our partners at Sid Gentle Films, have delivered a one-of-a-kind roller-coaster ride that has taken our breath away.”

However, while Killing Eve is definitely over, it may not be the end of the universe entirely.

“AMC Networks is working closely with Killing Eve producers Sid Gentle Films to develop potential spin-off ideas that will explore the larger world of the show,” he added.

Is Villanelle really dead?

Sadly, Villanelle is very dead.

It was revealed during the finale that it was Carolyn that ordered the final hit on her.

The ending annoyed fans around the world, and the book’s author even felt compelled to throw some shade at the events.

“Over the last week I’ve had messages from all over the world from Killing Eve fans expressing their feelings, often very movingly, about the TV show’s final episode,” Luke Jennings wrote.

“With all due respect to the show’s writers and the many magic moments they’ve given us, I think we all know that the story doesn’t end there.”

Fans of the BBC series took to Twitter to vent their anger.

One said: “You spend years watching a programme and then the finale comes and they truly and utterly [bleep] it!! What sort of ending is that. So royally [bleep]ed off.”

Another added: “The Killing Eve finale was so messed up I’m reading Luke Jennings’ books again. That’s how desperate I am to keep a happy ending for Villanelle and Eve.”

I can’t believe the end of #killingeve why would you do that?? They were finally together, they were ending their goal, they were happy, hate you creator,” concluded a third.
