Love Island confirm HUGE change for new series

There's a twist in store for islanders who smoke...

Love Island bosses have confirmed there will be NO smoking inside the villa area in the new series.

The fourth series of the ITV2 smash hit kicks off next month, with a new batch of islanders jetting over to Majorca in the hopes of finding love (and fame).

But viewers will notice a change to the format after show bosses opted to axe the smoking area this time around.

In previous years, we’ve seen the islanders gathered around in the garden, puffing on cigarettes as they dissect the latest gossip.

Not this year.

A spokesperson confirmed to Digital Spy: “There will be no smoking within the Love Island villa or the main villa garden this year.”

It was The Sun that first reported the smoking ban, saying there will instead be a designated smoking shelter away from the main villa.

There will still be cameras around the shelter, of course, so none of the drama is missed, but the smoking area won’t be smack bang in the centre of all the action.

And smoking islanders will apparently be taken out to the hut by producers alone, rather than having a big group of them gathering there.

There’s been a mixed reaction to the news, with some viewers worrying it could dilute the drama.

However, no doubt others are pleased, given dozens complained to Ofcom last series about the amount of smoking shown on camera.

Ofcom previously confirmed it had received 75 complaints about smoking – more than the amount of complaints received about contestants having sex on TV.

It even led to a discussion in the House of Lords!

Plenty of viewers have remarked about the amount of smoking during previous series, with one even saying: “Is smoking part of the application process for Love Island or something? What on earth.”

The new series of Love Island kicks off in June but the identities of this year’s islanders have been kept under wraps for now.

Returning host Caroline Flack, however, has promised just as much drama as always!

According to The Sun, there are even 45 islanders on ‘standby’ that can be brought in by producers throughout the show if they need to spice things up.

Bring it on!
