Mastermind champion defends win after viewer uproar over ‘wrong’ answer

Gerbil or Jerboa?

New Mastermind champion Judith Lewis proudly held aloft the trophy after a tense finish.

The final, which was filmed last November and shown on BBC last week, saw Judith get her final question right as the pips sounded.

But viewers noticed that her final answer sounded different from the correct answer.

Judith was tied on 27 points and needed one more correct answer to steal the title.

Mastermind host, John Humphries asked: “What long-tailed rodent was adopted as the symbol of the 7th Armoured Division who fought in North Africa in the Second World War and were known as the Desert Rats?”

As the pips sounded, Judith answered ‘jerboa’ although viewers at home claim that she pronounced her answer ‘gerbil’, but her answer was corrected.

Viewers took to Twitter to query the decision.

Judith has now spoken out and told The Sun: “I know a jerboa is different from a gerbil, but it was the last question.

“I could hear the bleep going, and I could hear my voice drop because I knew this was the last syllable I was going to say.

“What I said obviously sounded not unlike ‘gerbil’. What I’d said was ‘jerbo’. I now know it should be pronounced ‘jer-bo-a’, but I didn’t know that at the time.

“There was discussion among the technical crew, they went back and listened to it again, and in the end they were happy to accept it,” she added.

She also noted she still would have won even if it had been a tie as she was the contestant with the fewest passes.

A BBC spokesperson told Digital Spy, “During the recording of the final she was asked to repeat her answer to the last question in front of the live studio audience and her fellow finalists, and her original answer was replayed for review.”

“Both the producers and an independent verifier were satisfied that she had given the correct answer.”

The final also featured 72-year-old Hamish Cameron, who tragically died before the final was shown.

Hamish passed away mere months after taking part in filming for the BBC quiz last November.

It is believed the retired IT manager was diagnosed with cancer last December and died earlier this month.

However, despite his illness, Mr Cameron is reported to have told his family he wanted the grand final of the series to be aired on TV even if he had passed away before it was broadcast.
