Matt Willis, who appears on Saturday Night Takeaway tonight (March 30), has long been open about his drink and drug addiction.
Busted star Matt, who is married to TV presenter Emma Willis, made a documentary, Fighting Addiction, last year in which he discussed battling his demons.
And, speaking previously, Matt recalled an incident when he was aged seven that saw him “getting high” off his asthma pump. Sadly, he stated that he’s “always had it in me to find ways of dealing with who I am”.
Matt Willis on addiction battle
During an appearance on the mental health podcast The Naked Professor, Matt previously said: “I was mildly asthmatic as a kid and I used to hide under my duvet and take as many hits of my inhaler as I possibly could when I was about seven because it would make my head throb, make my lips tingle.
“I’d be getting high in my bed at seven years old, so I have always had this in me to find ways to get away from dealing with who I am and how I feel. Quitting drinking was one of the hardest tasks in my life.”
‘I have big cuts on my face from falling over’
Matt spoke more about his addiction during an interview with The Guardian in 2023.
As a teenager growing up in Surrey, he smoked a lot of weed. And, as many teens do, would drink in the park with his friends. However, the star admitted that he always took it to extremes.
“I’d be drinking to black out or have big cuts on my face from falling over,” he said. “It wasn’t a casual smoke in the park, it was always: ‘Let’s get as [bleep]ed up as I possibly can.'”
‘I used cocaine as a way to keep sober’
By the time he was in Busted, Matt had progressed to cocaine.
He admitted: “I used cocaine as a way to keep sober. About 11pm, I’d get some and stay up till five. It allowed me to keep in the game, because I was always drunk.”
He has previously said that becoming a father for the first time was the catalyst he needed to give up drink and drugs.
Saturday Night Takeaway is on Easter Saturday at 7pm on ITV1.
