Ross Barton and a white board broke Emmerdale fans hearts as he declared love to Debbie Dingle

No one could cope

Ross Barton brought Emmerdale viewers to tears last night as he declared his love for Debbie Dingle over a white board.

The character – played by Mike Parr – was back in hospital after having a skin graft to help improve the look of the scars left on his face after his recent acid attack.

The op had left him unable to speak temporarily as the wound healed, so he was provided with a white board and marker to communicate.

Ross used it to our his heart out to ex-lover Debbie, telling her he thinks she’s amazing and that he loves her.

He then heartbreakingly added: “I know you don’t.

“Maybe one day?”

Debbie – Charley Webb – could barely speak through her tears as, unknown to Ross, she’s partly to blame for his current predicament after she payed local thug Simon McManus to ‘wipe the smile’ off Joseph Tate’s face.

Unfortunately Simon took the instruction a bit too literally and then didn’t even get the right target, splashing acid in Ross’s face instead of Joe’s.

Debbie’s guilt got the better of her in the end and she fled from hospital, leaving Ross well and truly heartbroken.

Along with most of Twitter.

“…that scene between Ross and Debbie was heartbreaking tears in my eyes. Good acting @MikeParrActor and @MissCharleyWebb” sobbed one viewer, while another added: “Watching the scenes between Ross and Debbie tonight broke my heart.”

Another soap watcher tweeted: “Lads I’m bawling at Ross and Debbie in Emmerdale.”

And a fourth commented: “I’m absolutely bawling at Ross writing wee messages to Debbie because he can’t talk.”

Meanwhile, Debbie had other stuff to deal with when another  of her former lovers decided he wanted to get back with her, but he didn’t go about it in quite as cute a manner as Ross.

Joe recently discovered that Debbie ordered the acid attack and that he was the intended victim, not Ross.

But instead of shopping her to the police, he decided to blackmail her into a relationship, which is totally normal and not at all psychotic behaviour.

Fearing Joe would reveal her part in the attack, she felt she had no choice but to agree to his twisted plan.

And it’s going to break Ross’s heart even more when he finds out.
