Simon Gregson in row over Corrie suicide

The Corrie cast are hugely proud of the storyline and aren't afraid to defend it

Coronation Street star Simon Gregson has become involved in a spat with a viewer who criticised the show’s suicide storyline.

The actor has played Steve McDonald since 1989 and previously portrayed his character’s battle with depression in a high profile storyline in 2014.

And while the majority of viewers praised the show for its sensitive handling of Aidan Connor’s suicide, one took exception.

The viewer in question had an issue with Johnny Connor’s reaction to his son’s death, claiming his emotional reaction was ‘un-British’.

He tweeted his feelings towards cast members of the show, and they responded.

“As I believe the British are a caring loving people as everybody no matter where they are from is.

“No one is born a bad person it’s a environment issue.” [sic]

Other cast members told the viewer his tweeting was “over the top”.

Daniel Brocklebank, who plays vicar Billy Mayhew, typed to the fan: “You think crying over the loss of their son would classify them as a snowflake?

“Dude, get some therapy.”

Kate Ford, who plays Tracy Barlow, added: “The irony of this tweet is astounding. This is why men don’t talk about their feelings! Because of nonsense like this.”

She added: “This whole attitude to men not feeling comfortable showing emotion is the whole point of this suicide storyline.”
