BBC Breakfast’s Steph McGovern ridicules fan who criticised her accent

Her followers loved her response to the silly demand

One of the main reasons we love BBC Breakfast’s Steph McGovern is her no-nonsense style of presenting. And you can apparently expect the same from her over on Twitter.

The pregnant TV star mocked a fan, dissing her pronunciation of a certain word, telling followers: “This email has really made me laugh.”

The offending message was from a viewer called “Trevor”, who apparently doesn’t like the way Steph says “here”. He wrote: “Hi Steph, please don’t get me wrong, I like you and think you do a very good job and I’m not being patronising there.

“Your accent doesn’t bother me apart from one word that you mangle.

“Sorry, but could you please just say here as one syllable. You don’t have to put on a posh accent. Just say the word as it’s meant to be said. Thank you.”

Sharing an excerpt of the email on her profile, Steph, 37, wrote: “This email has really made me laugh. Two thoughts:

1) Can anyone say the word ‘here’ with one syllable? Try it. I’m curious.

2) Despite what Trev thinks, how I say the word ‘here’ IS all about my accent so he can one syllable off. #syllablejunkie.”

Her 362k followers were outraged on Steph’s behalf, with one tweeting: “Trevor is a tool. North East accents are musical and full of flavour.”

A second said: “Steph you are one of the only people on my telly that speak properly. #Teessider.” Another added: “Pride in regional accents! 👏🏻 I hope he never comes to Dudley and witnesses people saying ‘pound’ with two syllables in their thick Black Country accents, he might explode 😂.”

Some found the exchange amusing, with one saying: “😂😂 Too funny! These syllable/phonetic police are ridiculous!” Another reassured Steph, writing: “Don’t change. Anyone who doesn’t like the way you speak has the problem not you.”

One more added: “I love your accent. There’s nothing to change. Aren’t there more important things in the world for him to get upset about? Btw also love the reply ❤️.”

It followed an exciting announcement from the news presenter this weekend, revealing she is pregnant.

She tweeted: “I see my news is out! Yep, I am no longer with pot belly…… I am now with child. 🤰🏼 #babyonboard.”
