Stephen Graham and wife Hannah Walters have collaborated on a number of projects, spending time together on and off screen.
Hannah previously worked on Channel 4’s iconic This is England, where her husband also found fame. She also portrayed DC Megan Riley in the hit ITV series Whitechapel, as well as taking on the role of Beatrice in Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazar’s Revenge.
Looking back at their marriage, there was one heartbreaking moment that brought Stephen Graham and his wife Hannah Walters closer together.
How long have Stephen Graham and Hannah Walters been married?
Stephen Graham and wife Hannah met when they were both students at Rose Bruford College of Speech and Drama in London. They didn’t tie the knot until June 6, 2008 .
According to Stephen they were friends for years before anything romantic happened between them.
A heartbreaking event brought them closer when, in the early Noughties, Stephen had a breakdown when he first moved to London.
During a visit back home to Liverpool to see his family, he tried to take his own life.
Speaking on Radio Four’s Desert Island Discs, he revealed his parents were devastated to see their son in so much emotional pain.
“I’ll never forget the tears coming down both their faces,” he said.
“My mum kind of saw it. Then everything came out. Life was worth living thankfully.”
Hannah heard about what happened through Stephen’s mum and rallied round the star to support him.
It brought them closer together
“This is kind of where Hannah came into my life properly,” he added. “She knew what had happened. She was always in close contact with my mum.”
From that moment on, the pair’s friendship grew stronger than ever.
But it wasn’t until Hannah revealed she was leaving the UK to move to Spain that a romance developed.
“We were waiting at New Cross train station and I said to her, ‘Please don’t go to Spain. I love you’,” Stephen revealed.
“She went, ‘I’ve been waiting for five years for you to say that’. The next day we moved in together.”
Stephen has two children with Hannah.
The couple have a son called Alfie and a daughter called Grace.
Hearing his grandmother’s voice
Stephen opened up about his breakdown in 2021, where he explained it took place as a young man studying the craft.
While learning about method acting, he tapped into emotions he never experienced before, but it led him down a dark path.
He told The Times: “I had a couple of incidents and then I felt like I couldn’t handle it any more. It was like an induced psychosis. Basically, I had a breakdown.
“I was a young man, 20 years old. I’d just left home. My little brother had just been born. My mum and dad had lost a little boy [at birth] three years before. My nana had passed away when I was 14. I was in the big wide world on my own and it wasn’t easy. I was very close to my mum and dad and I think with the kind of intense work we did, tapping into emotions that I’d never really tapped into before…”
Stephen explained when he attempted to take his own life he heard the voice of his late grandmother uttering his name. He sought help with the support of his friends and family after.
