Sunday Brunch hit by yet another on-air snag

Live TV - in all its clumsy glory

| Updated:

Tim Lovejoy is a man of many talents – football expert, TV presenter, culinary whizz.

But we found ourselves running for the door when the Sunday Brunch presenter announced on this morning’s programme that he was about to show off one of his lesser-known skills.

He told viewers that he was going to start SINGING.

The incident happened while Lovejoy’s co-presenter Simon Rimmer was explaining to singer Bronagh Gallagher – who appeared in 1991 film The Commitments – how to rustle up a dish.

Suddenly, Lovejoy began gesturing to someone off-camera, before disappearing and re-emerging holding a microphone.

“You might wonder why I’m holding this, and it’s because…” he began.

At that point, Rimmer turned to face his colleague and interrupted: “You’re going to sing?”

That appeared to give Lovejoy a burst of inspiration, as he beamed: “I was going to sing a Commitments song, but I decided not to.”

His idea went down a storm with the day’s other guests – Made In Chelsea stars Jamie Laing, Sam Thompson and Georgia ‘Toff’ Toffolo, musician Louis Berry, comedian Joel Dommett and Pretty Little Liars actor Julian Morris – who let out a huge cheer.

Still holding the camera, Lovejoy added: “It’s either that or stand-up [comedy].”

In the end, we got neither – it was all just filler, following a blunder with a blender. Simon had switched on the food processor and it was a particularly LOUD one, and Bronagh could not be heard.

Tim went on to explain that the producers had had sound issues with Bronagh’s mic, which were now resolved, and the cookery was able to continue.

But that didn’t stop fans taking to social media to voice their opinions (no surprise there, then).

One viewer clearly thought that Lovejoy’s ad-libbing made the show, tweeting: “Go on @timelovejoy, give us a song!”

Another was merely bemused by the presenter, commenting: “Is Tim Lovejoy in a world of his own?”

But a third wasn’t impressed with Lovejoy’s performance on the show at all, asking: “How is @TimLovejoy still on #SundayBrunch. He was cringeworthy from the outset with no knowledge about cooking and well out his comfort zone.”

Cookery programmes seem to be just as much about the mishaps as they are about the actual cooking.

Just a couple of weeks ago, we reported how Saturday Kitchen Donal Skehan had sliced his finger open on live TV.

But hey, that’s what we watch these things for, isn’t it?
